Canine Training Academic Article

Middlehope Veterinary Hospital & Pet N Play Resort Canine Training Academy

Does your fur baby completely ignore you when you call them? Is it impossible to take them on walks? Do you dread going to the vet with them? Do you actively avoid other dogs and people when you do take them on walks? Do you find yourself postponing vacations or trips due to not being able to leave your dog anywhere with anyone? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you and your best friend would both benefit from professional dog training. And training isn’t just for puppies! Yes, old dogs can learn new tricks!

Our canine academy classes focus on more than just training your puppy to use the bathroom outdoors or your adult dog to “shake.” When we are training our puppies and dogs, we’re teaching them to be good citizens and well-behaved members of society. If you want your four-legged friend to be able to go everywhere and anywhere with you, training is essential. Positive, reward-based training teaches you how to redirect your animal companion’s inappropriate actions and reward good behavior.

Training benefits both you and your dog in several ways. Here’s a short list of the improvements you’ll see if you enroll your pup in our training academy:

Safety

The more reliably your dog responds to verbal commands, the greater the chance that you’ll be able to control them unrestrained and off-leash. A dog can easily slip a leash and run out the door and bolt toward the road or in front of a car. A well-trained dog is more likely to obey your commands and avoid dangerous situations. Professionally trained dogs also have better impulse control than their untrained counterparts and often won’t engage in such risky behavior to begin with.

Confidence & Sociability

A dog that learns boundaries and is taught how to behave in various social interactions puts other people and dogs at ease. It’s easier to make friends with a dog that respects boundaries and is obedient, happy, calm, and relaxed during social interactions. Increased sociability is especially helpful when you need to board your best friend at PetNPlay Resort or if you need to bring them to Middlehope Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

A Better Bond

Professional dog training not only helps your dog navigate his world calmly and with confidence. It also provides you with a better understanding of their needs, making you a better owner. It nurtures your bond and makes dog ownership more pleasurable, setting you up for a lifetime of trust. Having an obedient dog means they’ll be more focused on you. This is extremely helpful when you don’t want to compete for their attention with other dogs, people, or even food.

A Drop in Problem Behaviors

Training redirects inappropriate actions and stops unwanted behaviors like nipping, jumping, destructive chewing, and potty issues. Some destructive behaviors are due to boredom, and training gives your fur baby a job to do. Mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical exercise.

Because we understand that canine training never really ends, classes are always in session at the Middlehope Veterinary Hospital and PetNPlay Resort Canine Training Academy! Our classes are aimed at dogs of all ages and training levels. Puppies as young as 8 weeks old are welcome once they’ve received the appropriate vaccinations.

If you think your pooch could benefit from professional training or if you’d like more information about our classes, give us a call at (845) 243-2686! We’ll be thrilled to get you started.
